The eLearning Industry looks at responsibilities and expectations of hiring effective online instructors for the digital classroom. Berge (2008) cites four roles teachers should demonstrate to be an effective online educator:
- Social Role: Digital classroom teachers must be able to create a highly engaging learning environment that promotes interaction and collaboration
- Technical Role: Digital classroom teachers must provide an online environment that supports learning by utilizing effective technologies
- Managerial Role: Digital classroom teachers must assist students in organizing their learning experiences by providing clear expectations, responsibilities, procedures, and support.
- Pedagogical Role: Digital classroom teachers must be highly trained in current, effective teaching practices to support teaching and learning in a high-quality online learning environment.
